Ziaur Rahman

Ziaur Rahman is considered to be one of Bangladesh's most popular presidents. Born in 1936 in the northern district of Bogra, he came to prominence when he fought valiantly in the war of liberation against Pakistan in 1971. He became President of Bangladesh in 1976 and rose to great prominence through his efforts for the country's economic development and self reliance.

In his lifetime he enjoyed unfaltering public support and great popularity. Zia died in the hands of some misguided army officials in May, 1981. Today, even 22 years after his demise, Zia is revered by all Bangladeshis for his leadership and love for the people.
