Whitespace

In computing, whitespace is a sequence of characters which do not display themselves, but determine where the text that follows is displayed: spaces, line breaks and tabs.

Most languages ignore whitespace (HTML turns it into a single space) and this means it can be used to make code clearer. Lines are often indented to show they are part of a block, for example an if statement or a loop.
