War of Devolution

The War of Devolution (1667-68) was a war, fought between France and the Triple Alliance of 1668. The war's name stems from a quote by the French King Louis XIV, who argued that territory should "devolve" to him. The justification France gave, for starting the war, is that Spain owed Louis a dowry for his marriage to Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche. During the war, there was combat in Flanders and the Franche-Comté. In the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668), Spain ceded Lille and France returned control of the Franche-Comté, to Spain.
