Unorganized territory

Unorganized territory is the official term for an area in nine of the United States of America that is equivalent to, but is not included under the jurisdiction of, a minor civil division, a primary governmental or administrative division of a county.

The nine states where UT's may be found are Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Unorganized territories also exist in certain regions of Canada, such as Northern Ontario where there is no region-wide level of government.

American Samoa which is administered by the Office of Insular Affairs, US Department of the Interior, is an unincorporated and also an unorganized territory.
