The Invisible Man

Two famous novels share the title The Invisible Man. The first is an 1897 work of science fiction by H.G. Wells. The second is a social critique by Ralph Ellison about a man who is not literally invisible, but socially.

A filmed version of The Invisible Man was produced by Universal Pictures in 1931, directed by James Whale. The movie is considered one of the great Universal horror films of the 1930s, and it spawned a number of sequels, plus many spinoffs using the idea of an "invisible man" that were largely unrelated to Wells' original story. In his first screen appearance, Claude Rains was the voice of the Invisible Man (Dr. Jack Griffin) -- though in the only scene where the face of the Invisible Man was seen, a different actor was used.

Another related movie is the film, Hollow Man, which chronicles Sebastian Caine becoming invisible, and his subsequent madness as well as the ensuing chaos.
