The Flamin' Groovies

The Flamin' Groovies are considered by their fans the greatest band that no one has ever heard of. They began in San Francisco in 1965, founded by Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney. The first few albums, made with Loney, have a distinctive bluesy edge, somewhat like the Stones. The final album of this period, Teenage Head, has been compared with the Stones' Sticky Fingers.

In the early to mid-1970s, the Groovies moved to England. Roy Loney left the group, and was replaced by Chris Wilson. The Stonesy/bluesy sound was replaced by a lighter, more melodic pop sound which anticipated New Wave music. It was a "back to the roots" music which was totally out of place in that era, but it was considered absolutely terrific by their fans.

The acknowledged masterpiece of the Groovies was released in 1976. A very strong collection of great songs, it was highlighted by the anthemic title track, Shake Some Action. With ringing guitar lines, an urgent beat, and fine vocals, this song remains a classic 25 years later. Fans believe that any New Wave or Power Pop collection which does not have this album, or at least the Groovies' Greatest Hits album, cannot be considered complete.

Other good music followed "Shake Some Action", notably the song and album, Jumpin' in the Night. But Jumpin' in the Night, released in 1980, was to be their final album.
