The school was founded in 1883, making it the oldest state school in Sydney. At this time, it was located on Castlereagh Street in the city of Sydney. Later, it moved to Mary Ann Street, Ultimo. In 1928, the school moved to its current location at Moore Park, on the fringe of the inner city.
The school is made up of 11 departments, each teaching one or a variety of related Board of Studies endorsed subjects. The departments are:
The English department is one of the largest in the school is terms of student numbers and number of staff members. The head teacher of English is Marcia Shepherd. The following subjects are taught by the English department: English (Years 8-10), English Advanced (Years 11-12), English Extension 1 (Years 11-12), English Extension 2 (HSC) and Drama (Years 10-12).
The Languages other than English department is a relatively small but diverse department. It is also fairly new, as originally there was a Classics department, which taught Classical Greek, Hebrew and Latin, and a Modern Languages department, teaching Chinese, German and French. These two departments were merged in the 1990s, or rather, the Classics department was annexed by the Modern Languages department. The head teacher of LOTE is Glen Davies. Subjects offered are:
The creative arts department is divided into two subdepartments: Music and Visual Arts. Music Subdepartment teaches four subjects: Music, Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension, while Visual Arts has more staff and teaches a wider range of subjects: Visual Arts and Digital Imaging, Photography and Video. The head teacher of Creative Arts and Visual Arts SD is Nic Morris. The main teacher of Music SD is Debra Gilmore. The Music SD is also involved in the co-curricular band and instrumental activities of the school.
Due to the fact that Sydney Boys High School is a selective school, it only accepts students from year 7 that have passed an academic ability test in year 6. There are also places for entry in year 11, as well as a reserve list system in year 8-10 for those who have not been offered a place in other years.
High Notes is the weekly news brochure (or newsletter) of SBHS. It is given out in printed form to every student, and, since April 2003, is available online at the school site.
High Notes has information from every department, as well as information about general notices and events.
Grading in Sydney Boys High School is based on a variety of tests, assessments, presentations and assignments. Each of these are allocated by each department based on the subject syllabus. An assessment report is given after Term 2 and after Term 4, since grades are given for each half of the year. These are called Half-Yearly and Yearly grades. Most subjects have exams just before the Half-Yearly and Yearly reports come out.
The following grades are given for every subject that each students studies:
