Susquehanna River

The Susquehanna River is a river in the northeastern United States. There are two branches of the river the west branch and north branch. The north branch starts in New York State with the West Branch originating within Pennsylvania. These branches meet at Sunbury to form the main branch of the river. The main branch flows through Pennsylvania and Maryland into the Chesapeake Bay, which is in fact an estuary consisting of the drowned lower valley of the Susquehanna. Rising near Cooperstown, New York, the river winds southward through the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the state capital, is located on the Susquehanna.

The river suffered the dumping of more than 40,000 gallons of radioactive fuel during the Three Mile Island meltdown in 1979.
