Stephen Douglas

Stephen Arnold Douglas (April 23, 1813 - June 3, 1861) is best known for his 1858 Senate race against Abraham Lincoln, which Douglas won. During this race Lincoln and Douglas held a series of seven debates across Illinois. Douglas later faced Lincoln in the presidential race of 1860, this time losing to Lincoln.

Douglas County, Nevada is named for him, as is Douglas, Georgia.
