Shetland pony

Shetland ponies are small (about one meter from the ground to wither) but strong for their size. Ancient equids had lived in Shetland since the Bronze Age, and were later crossed with ponies imported by Norse invaders. The resulting Shetland ponies were domesticated by the islanders, and many of them were imported to mainland Britain at the time of the Industrial Revolution to work in coal mines. Some of these animals were exported to the American mid-west to work in the coal mines there.
