Sedgwick County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 452,869. Its county seat is Wichita, Kansas6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,614 km² (1,009 mi²). 2,588 km² (999 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.99% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 452,869 people, 176,444 households, and 117,688 families residing in the county. The population density is 175/km² (453/mi²). There are 191,133 housing units at an average density of 74/km² (191/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.38% White, 9.13% Black or African American, 1.11% Native American, 3.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.17% from other races, and 2.81% from two or more races. 8.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 176,444 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.70% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
