It is on the Canadian border, separated by the St. Mary's River from the town of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 52.3 km² (20.2 mi²). 38.4 km² (14.8 mi²) of it is land and 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.63% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 16,542 people, 5,742 households, and 3,301 families residing in the city. The population density is 431.0/km² (1,116.3/mi²). There are 6,237 housing units at an average density of 162.5/km² (420.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 73.99% White, 6.51% African American, 13.72% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 4.61% from two or more races. 1.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
