Sara Carter

Sara Carter (née Sara Dougherty), (July 21, 1898-January 8, 1979). Sarah was born in Copper Creek, Virginia (Rich Valley), daughter of William Sevier Dougherty and Nancy Elizabeth Kilgore. On June 18, 1915, Sara and A.P. Carter were married. Sara was a member of the Carter Family, perhaps the first commercial rural country music group. On October 15, 1936, A.P. and Sara divorced. Sara later remarried and moved to California. In 1993, Sara's image appeared on a U.S. postage stamp honoring the Carter Family.
