Raspberry
The Raspberry is a plant which produces a red berry in late summer or early autumn, which is essentially identical to the Blackberry except for its colour. It grows typically in forest clearings or fields, particularly where fire or wood-cutting has produced open space for colonization by this opportunistic colonizer of disturbed soil. As a domesticated plant, it is easy to grow and has a tendancy to spread unless cut back. Two types are commercially available: the everbearing plant, which bears fruit on first-year canes throughout most of the summer and fall, and a Junebearing type that produces an abundance of fruit within a relatively short period in midsummer. Raspberries can be cultivated through USDA hardiness zone 4.
A Golden Raspberry, which is pale yellow, has been selected by horticulturalists.
Raspberry is also a term for a rude noise produced by pursing the lips and blowing. It is also called a Bronx cheer in the USA.
A mischievous US annual award, the Golden Raspberry Award, is awarded for misbegotten contributions in the area of motion picture production, acting, and script writing. A parody of the National Academy (Oscar) Awards, frequent winners include John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone for acting, and many motion pictures which famously flopped.
Some quite distinguished actors, directors and producers have received (no doubt reluctantly) the recognition of a Golden Raspberry.
The "Razzies" are open to the public to adjudicate, not unlike the People's Choice Award.
