Proof

The word proof can mean:

1. originally, a test assessing the validity or quality of something. Hence the saying, "The exception that proves the rule" -- the rule is tested to see whether it applies even in the case of the (apparent) exception.
2. a rigorous, compelling argument, including:
   • a logical argument or a mathematical proof (see also proof theory)
   • a legal proof
   • a large accumulation of scientific evidence
3. a photograph, print or page layout presented as an example for proofreading or approval
4. alcoholic proof, a measure of how much alcohol is in a beverage
