Populist

A populist is someone who tries to reach out to ordinary people, often by talking about their economic concerns. Populists sometimes promise to "stand up to corporations" and "put people first."

The problem is bogus populism. Promising to stand up to "the powerful trial lawyer lobby" may sound good to some people, but an ordinary person who suffers a workplace injury or medical malpractice needs the help of trial lawyers to get compensated. Legislation which limits compensation would hurt ordinary people in the process of standing up to trial lawyers.

Similarly, promises to stand up to "the liberal elite" or "the Hollywood elite" may sound good to some people, but these labels are dubious. Liberal policies such as universal health care, inheritance taxes on the rich, and affordable housing benefit most people, and therefore aren't elite.

Regarding "the Hollywood elite," people think it's great when a celebrity makes a political statement they agree with. It's only when a celebrity makes a political statement they disagree with that they may use a negative term like "the Hollywood elite."
