Plaid (clothing)
Properly a plaid is a large length of cloth, usually tartan1, worn pleated and wrapped around the waist with the end cast over the shoulder in the ancient style of kilt. A belt and often sporran are worn to support the mass of material gathered at the waist.
1 A tartan is a lot more complicated than just plaid, being a symbol of heraldry.
