Manala

Manala, in Finnish mythology is the realm of the dead. There are different places, according to the cause of death and nature of the deceised. They are:

  • Tuonela: peaceful place of death, where children and "pure", innocent people went after death.
  • Manala: The place of common people after death: "Mennä manan majoille"; To go to cottages of Mana.
  • Surma: Place od accidental death or death in war. "Joutua surman suuhun"; to fall into deaths mouth.
  • Kalma: Dye to a sickness: "Häneen tarttui kalman koura"; The grip of Kalma´s hand took him.
