Lüneburg (district)

Lüneburg is a Kreis (district) in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the southern banks of the Elbe river. Area 1323 km², population 164,300 (2001). The district's capital is Lüneburg.

The district is characterised by the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide) in the south and the riverside woodlands along the Elbe. Though most of the district is located south of the river, there is a small portion around the municipality of Neuhaus on the opposite side.
