List of Puerto Rican political parties
In
Puerto Rico, there has always been a list of contenders for power in the island. Historically, there are three major parties: The
PPD, led currently by
Sila Maria Calderon, the
PNP, led by Carlos Pesquera, and the
PIP, traditionally led by
Ruben Berrios. The PPD and PNP have exchanged the Governor's seat since
1948, but the PIP has also had an impact on the election: Many consider that the small group of PIP voters could have made a difference as to which of the other two major parties won some of the close elections.
