List of Louisiana parishes

The state of Louisiana is divided into parishes in much the way that the other states of the United States of America are divided into counties. At the time of the Louisiana Purchase, these governmental divisisions were geographically the same as the eclisiastical parishes of the Roman Catholic Church, but they are no longer so. After Louisiana became part of the USA there was a movement by some elements of the Lousisiana legislature to change the name of the governmental units to "counties" like in the rest of the USA, but this was objected to by much of the populace, so the name "Parish" has been maintained.
