According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 231.8 km² (89.5 mi²). 228.2 km² (88.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.55% water.
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,076 people, 3,177 households, and 1,995 families residing in the town. The population density is 31.0/km² (80.3/mi²). There are 4,127 housing units at an average density of 18.1/km² (46.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.06% White, 2.81% African American, 0.62% Native American, 2.29% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 2.74% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. 10.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
