Irredentism

Irredentism is claiming a right to territories belonging to another state on the grounds of prior historical possession, actual or alleged.

Irredentist movements include those of Gabriele D'Annunzio taking over Fiume after World War I and German claims in the Nazi era to Poland and Sudetenland.

In the Middle East, there are claims to the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem and (sometimes) Israel by advocates of a Palestinian homeland. In addition, the Zionist movement that led to the establishment of the state of Israel in the former British Mandate of Palestine was based in part on the historical Jewish presence in that region.
