Inverted pendulum

Also called cart and pole, an inverted pendulum is a pole attached to a moving cart. Whereas a normal pendulum heads down, an inverted pendulum is an actively balanced "standing" pole. The movement of the cart has to be controlled to keep the pole upstraight.

The inverted pendulum is a widely used benchmark for testing control algorithms ( PID controller, neural networks, ...). Modern controllers are capable of even balancing multiple linked pendulums.
