Impressionism
Impressionism is a 19th century art movement. What was to become a painting movement began as a private association of Paris-based friends who exhibited together publicly for the first time in 1874. The name comes from Monet's famous picture Impression, soleil levant (see here [1]), 1873, which was singled out for criticism by Louis Leroy on its exhibition.See also Impressionist music

Impressionism as Painting Technique
The Impressionist approach to painting is usually identified with a strong concern for light in its changing qualities, often with an emphasis on the effects of a particular passage of time.
