The book and film have essentially similar plots, though the action is moved from London, in the book, to Chicago in the film. Rob (Cusack) is a record shop owner in in his 30s whose girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle) has left him. At the record shop he and his employees Dick (Todd Louiso) and Barry (Black) spend their free moments constructing "top five" lists of anything that springs to mind. Rob recalls his top five breakups, and sets about getting in touch with the former girlfriends (Zeta-Jones among them). Eventually the death of Laura's father brings Rob and Laura back together, and their relationship is cemented by the launch of a new direction in Rob's life - the revival of his DJ career in the book, and the launch of a record label in the film.
