The girls continue seeing each other after their families forbid it, and eventually plot the murder of the mother of one of the girls. The film was based on the true story of the Parker-Hulme Murder in Christchurch, New Zealand. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film also launched the career of actress Kate Winslet.

After the film was released, it came to light that historical mystery writer Anne Perry was Juliet Hulme, one of the killers.
