Geography\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,225 km² (473 mi²). 1,201 km² (464 mi²) of it is land and 24 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.95% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,695 people, 8,822 households, and 6,987 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (51/mi²). There are 10,288 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.43% White, 19.47% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,822 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.80% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.80% are non-families. 17.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
