Golden Globe Award
The Golden Globe Awards are annually awarded trophies for motion pictures and television programs. Run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1944, these are usually regarded as the second most prestigious awards for movies and television, after the leading Academy Awards (for film) and Emmy Awards (for television). The awards are voted on by a group of international journalists working in Hollywood, California.
Unlike the current incarnations of the Oscars and Emmys, however, the nominees and other Hollywood and New York media elite have formal sit-down dinners while watching the ceremonies and award presentation, a more traditional format that the Academy Awards were originally like.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sends out their ballots for the Academy Awards only days after the Golden Globe award winners are announced. Many Hollywood film makers rely on receiving Golden Globe nominations and awards, as this refreshes the Academy's memory of their movie.
