Golden Age of Comic Books

The Golden Age of Comic Books was a period in the history of the comic book medium which enjoyed a major surge of reader popularity. It is estimated to have lasted roughly from 1938 to about 1949 in which the superhero fantasy genre reigned as the primary genre of the medium.

It began with the premiere of Superman in Action Comics #1 by DC Comics and proved so popular that it eventually sparked a plethora of similar characters.

The most popular character was Captain Marvel by Fawcett Comics. However, the most acclaimed series of the period was The Spirit by Will Eisner which is still being reprinted today.
