Global Television Network

The Global Television Network (more commonly called Global) is a major English-language television network in Canada. It first signed on in 1974 as an Ontario-only independent channel, but went almost nationwide in 1997 when stations owned by CanWest were renamed. There are still large areas of Canada where Global is not available, most notably Newfoundland. In 2001 Global started a national newscast. Global airs almost exclusively United States-produced programming, and has been criticized for not producing enough of its own shows and being too cheap.

Hit shows currently airing on Global include Friends, Frasier, Will and Grace, The Simpsons and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Regional stations that have been absorbed into the Global network included:

  • UTV (Vancouver) (until 2001; now part of Citytv)
  • BCTV (Vancouver)
  • ITV (Edmonton)
  • CICT (channel 7, Calgary)
  • STV (Saskatchewan)
  • CKND (Winnipeg)
  • Global Television Network (Ontario and Quebec)
  • MITV (Maritimes)
