FIFA

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is the international governing body of the sport of football (sometimes called soccer).

The organisation works in conjunction with regional arms that oversee football development in the different parts of the world. The six conferdations that comprise FIFA (and the regions that they govern) are:

  • AFC - (Asia)
  • CAF - (Africa)
  • CONMEBOL - (South America)
  • CONCACAF - (North and Central America)
  • OFC - (Oceania)
  • UEFA - (Europe)

FIFA organizes, amongst others, the following football competitions:

  1. Football World Cup
  2. Olympic Football Tournament.
  3. Football World Youth Championship.
  4. Women's World Cup.

FIFA also regulate the transfer of players between teams, and the general promotion of the sport. The laws of football that govern the game, are maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) which consists of one representative from the The Football Association (FA), Scottish Football Association (SFA), the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Irish Football Association (IFA) and four representatives from FIFA.
