Federal republic

A federal republic is a republic constituting a union of states or districts. Each state or district retains a subordinate and limited sovereignty under a central republican authority.

Examples include Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Russia, and the United States of America.

A republic is not a requirement for a federal form, e.g. Canada and Australia are federations but not republics.
