Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,806 people, 10,467 households, and 8,017 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 11,214 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.48% White, 35.95% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,467 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.50% are married couples living together, 14.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.40% are non-families. 20.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
