Escudo
Escudo was the unit of currency used in Portugal prior to the introduction of the Euro. 100 centavos made up one escudo. The currency was expressed with a dollar sign ($). It was written as escudos $ centavos (e.g. 100$50 means 100 escudos and 50 centavos). Centavos became essentially worthless and were used only with the 2$50 coin. Prior to elimination of local currencies and at the time of conversion, the exchange rate was 200.482 escudos to one Euro.Escudo is Portuguese for "shield".
