Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a procedure characterized as a close inspection of the cervix with a microscope. In some cases an OB/GYN may opt to take a biopsy, or tissue sample, from the cervix during this procedure to test for abnormalities or warts.

People must be educated about the fact that warts are contagious and that one should not attempt to break or treat genital warts on their own (since they can spread easily). More research needs to be done about whether warts that develop on the cervix compromise fertility (although they are not presently known to), and whether cervical warts are indicative of a different HPV viral strain than genital warts.
