Carlisle Floyd

Carlisle Floyd (born 1926) in Latta, South Carolina, is an American classical music composer, who specialises in writing operas. Many of his operas are based on themes from Southern states. Many people consider his opera Susannah (1956) to be his masterpiece, and this is widely performed within the United States. Besides Susannah, he has written others, including:

  • Susannah (1956)
  • Wuthering Heights (1958)
  • The Passion of Jonathan Wade (1962)
  • The Sojourner and Mollie Sinclair (1964) TV opera
  • Of Mice and Men (1970)
  • Flower and Hawk
  • ''Bilby's Doll (1976)
  • Willie Stark (1981)
  • Cold Sassy Tree (2000) for the Houston Grand Opera and the San Diego Opera
