Canton of Schwyz

Schwyz (German Schwyz (shveets), French Schwyz (shveets), Italian Svitto (zveet'to)) is a canton in central Switzerland between Lake Lucerne in the South and Lake Zurich in the North.

Together with Uri and Unterwalden it is one of the founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation (Pact of the Rütli, August 1, 1291). It's one of the Four Woodlands (Vier Waldstätten, Schwyz, Uri, Unterwalden, Lucerne), located on the shores of the Vierwaldstättersee Lake Lucerne.

In Schwyz, in the Museum of the Swiss Charters (Bundesbriefmuseum) the charter of 1291 is on display. NE of the town of Schwyz is the world-famous abbey of Einsiedeln. Brunnen is located on Lake Lucerne.
