Calder and Hebble Navigation
The
Calder and Hebble Navigation is a
canal system in
West Yorkshire,
England. Construction was started in
1757 by the
engineer John Smeaton to provide a navigable
waterway between
Wakefield and
Halifax. The
River Calder was to be used where possible, and canals were cut between sections of the river to straighten it out. The River Hebble was also used. Construction finished in
1770.
The Navigation runs from Wakefield via Horbury,
Ossett,
Dewsbury, to
Mirfield where it is joined by the River Colne and the Huddersfield Broad Canal. The Kirklees Cut straightens out the river as it continues to
Brighouse, then
Halifax and
Sowerby Bridge. The river continues, but the Navigation terminates where the Rochdale Canal starts.
