British North America Act
The British North America Act was the name used for acts of the British Parliament including those passed in 1867 and 1871 to delegate self-government powers to the Dominion of Canada. Canada and the other British dominions achieved independence only with the passage of the Statute of Westminster in 1931 though until 1982 it was always possible for the British Parliament to pass a law changing any Canadian law.
In 1982, upon the passage of the Constitution Act of 1982, that repatriated these British statutes to Canada the names of the British North America Acts were changed to the "Constitution Act," and together with the 1982 act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms they have all become collectively known known as the Canadian Constitution.
