Brain damage

Brain damage is the destruction or degeneration of brain cells.

Possible causes of widespread (diffuse) brain damage include prolonged hypoxia (shortage of oxygen), poisoning, and infection. Localized brain damage can be caused by physical trauma (head injury), stroke, or brain tumour.

Brain damage can result in permanent disability, including speech or movement problems and mental handicap. Severe brain damage may result in coma or death.
