Battle of Yi Ling

(夷陵之戰) In 222, Liu Bei enraged at the betrayal of the Kingdom of Wu to his sworn brother Guan Yu, lead an attack force to the plains of Yi Ling. Sun Quan of Wu had placed Lu Xun, a competent young strategist in charge of the Wu Army at the battleground. Liu Bei's troops were weary from the long march from Cheng Du. However, Liu Bei did not falter and ordered an immediate attack. Liu Bei's army was massive, and litterely out-numbered the Wu. Lu Xun's plans included a fire attack against Liu Bei's camp, which succeeded and made Liu Bei withdraw. Many fine warriors died at the Battle of Yi Ling. Although Ma Chao, Huang Zhong and Gan Ning all died in 222 (along with others), it is unknown if they died in battle at Yi Ling or due to illness later in the year.
