Apical ancestorAn apical ancestor is an ultimate ancestor to which a lineage or clan can trace its descent. In the case of clans, this may be a supposed ancestor chosen for unification purposes. If the apical ancestor of a clan is nonhuman, it is a totem. See kinship and descent.
