Andie MacDowell

Andie MacDowell

Andie MacDowell (born April 21, 1958) is an American actress. She was born in Gaffney, South Carolina as one of four daughters. When she was 6, her parents divorced and her mother became alcoholic because of depression.

MacDowell went to college until 1978, when she decided to leave and move to New York. There she began working as a model, having signed with a model agency. One of her outstanding works was for the cosmetic and haircare company L'Oreal, with which she still keeps a collaborative relation. A series of TV commercials for Calvin Klein draw the attention on her and lead in 1984 to her film debut in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. It was a nice start, even though the producers decided to have her lines dubbed by Glenn Close, as her Southern accent did not match the British aristocrat she played. In 1985 she had a small part in St. Elmo's Fire, but her film career seemed to have ended.

Four years later, in 1989, her acting career picked up again. Director Steven Soderbergh made his first film, Sex, Lies, and Videotape, and MacDowell proved that she did have talent for acting, not only beauty. One year later she had another critically acclaimed performance in Green Card. She received a Golden Globe nomination for both films. Her biggest success was the 1994 box-office hit Four Weddings and a Funeral, co-starring Hugh Grant.

MacDowell was married between 1986 and 1999 to Paul Qualley, from whom she divorced. From this marriage she has a son and two daughters. In 2001 she married Atlanta businessman Rhett DeCamp Hartzog.
