2006 Commonwealth Games

The 2006 Commonwealth Games are going to be held in Melbourne, Australia.

At this early stage, concerns have already arisen about the large cost of staging the Games, with costs blowing out to over 1 billion Australian dollars and a high likelihood that the state government will have to cover the expense. This cost has been described in local media as excessive for what many regard as a second-rate sports event. Local residents are also unhappy with the location of the Games Village, in what they argue is in a local park - however, the site is currently a psychiatric hospital located on the park's boundary.
